After an inspirational year at Newark College studying Theatre Arts, Bill Varnam successfully auditioned for a place at the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance. After graduation he toured one man shows, conducted numerous workshops and became involved with a range of community ventures working creatively with children in schools and libraries and young people in youth centres. Bill has also specialised in working with people with physical and intellectual disabilities and has also enjoyed a spell as a Children's Entertainer on a Holiday Camp. He gained full Equity membership which enabled him to work in television between his various free-lance and community projects. Bill has written most of his own performance material over the years and has also written short stories and 'morning thoughts' for local radio. More recently Bill has forged creative links with Brass Band Ensembles combining narrative and character cameos at various events. This experience proved invaluable when working with Open Road Productions in some of their Productions held at the Guildhall Theatre Derby. Bill is also a musician in his own right and has maintained a passion for writing songs and of course appreciating the songs of others. His latest creative offering, a one man show called "Free Spirit" was in partnership with song writer Phil Baggaley under the wing of Open Road Productions.
Born and raised in a musical family, a lifetime love of listening to, creating and performing music has been an intrinsic part of his life. Playing in a variety of bands on keyboards, brass instruments and bass guitar, as well as leading various choirs of all ages, Ian has remained involved in music despite a separate career looking after the planet(!), managing environmental issues amongst other things for a local water company and a major global business.
With their strong family connections, Phil Baggaley and Ian have worked on music together since their teenage years writing, recording and performing music around the UK. In 1997 performing the internationally acclaimed album City of Gold required Ian to arrange for and train a number of first-time choirs around the country to supplement the live performance. Events which remain a highlight of his music career.
Despite being involved in all of Phil’s previous musicals to date, Starry Eyed Dreamers is the first time that Ian has been let loose working with such a magnificent cast and production team. Hopefully no performers or their careers will be damaged as a result!
